Wind & Sailing Conditions

Trade winds from the south-east and east prevail for most of the year, with north-easterlies joining in from spring through mid-summer. Most days sit under 16 knots — genuinely relaxed cruising — with fresher breezes most common from late summer into autumn.

Tides in the Whitsundays

Tidal range here is real — typically 2 to 4 metres — and it quietly shapes each day: when to slip into a shallow inlet, when the beach is widest, which anchorage sleeps most soundly. The BOM's Shute Harbour tide table is the reference every charterer uses; a printed copy is aboard your bareboat which your Brifer will show you how to interpret. For guests on skippered charters, your captain and crew will take care of where and when to visit.

What It Means for You

Great cruising exists in every month — the question is flavour. Winter brings dry, mild days and steady breezes; summer trades them for warmer water, greener islands and quieter anchorages. Unsure which suits your group? Our team will happily talk you through it.
